Description This is an individual item contained within archival collection MS120.

Original B&W photograph on gray cardboard mount. Informal portrait photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Israel Bedell seated indoors. Mr. Bedell is seated at left, in what appears to be a rocking chair; he has white or gray hair and a beard, and wears a suit with the coat unbuttoned. Mrs. Bedell is seated at right. She wears glasses, and her gray hair is drawn back; she wears a shirtwaist or blouse in a patterned fabric, with a high collar, pleated front, and puffed sleeves; her skirt appears to be made of a plain, dark fabric, also with pleats at the front. In the background at right, there is a cupboard in what appears to be the corner of a room; there are dishes on the shelves inside. A small sticker or decal with an image of holly leaves and berries is attached to the mount below the photo.
Biography and History Israel and Charlotte (Manee) Bedell, married in 1852, lived with their six children in a house on Amboy Road in Pleasant Plains, Staten Island. Israel worked as an oysterman.
